When and What To Plant Outside In Northeast NC

Edited by Jonathan Moore

As spring approaches in Northeast North Carolina, local gardeners are itching to get their hands in the dirt—but when exactly is the right time to start planting, and what should you plant? Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or just starting your first flower bed, knowing your planting zone, local frost dates, and soil conditions can make all the difference.

🌱 What Planting Zone Is Northeast North Carolina?

We’re located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 8a, which means our average minimum winter temperatures range from 10–15°F. That gives us a relatively long growing season—great news for those who love getting an early start on planting annuals and perennials.

❄️ Don’t Be Fooled by Warm Days: Watch for Frost

It might be tempting to start planting once we hit a string of sunny days in March, but frost is still a real threat well into April. In our region, the average last frost date is between April 1st and April 15th, depending on your proximity to the coast and elevation.

Pro Tip: Use soil thermometers and local frost tracking apps—or just check in with your favorite garden center (we've listed them below!)—to stay ahead of surprise cold snaps.

🌼 What to Plant and When

Here’s a quick breakdown of popular annuals and perennials and their ideal planting windows in our region:

Early Spring (After Last Frost – Mid-April+)

  • Annuals: Petunias, snapdragons, marigolds, impatiens, zinnias

  • Perennials: Daylilies, hostas, black-eyed Susans

  • Veggies: Tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers

Late Spring to Early Summer (May–June)

  • Annuals: Vinca, cosmos, salvia

  • Perennials: Coneflowers, coreopsis, Russian sage

  • Veggies: Okra, eggplant, sweet potatoes

Fall Planting (September–October)

  • Perennials: Ornamental grasses, mums, rudbeckia

  • Veggies: Kale, lettuce, spinach, broccoli

  • Bulbs: Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths (for spring bloom)

🌊 Soil Conditions Near the Coast: What to Know

Living near the Albemarle Sound, the Outer Banks, and the inland rivers means our soil varies dramatically—even from one yard to the next.

  • Sandy Soil (common near the coast): Drains well but lacks nutrients. Mix in compost and organic matter.

  • Clay Soil (inland and river-adjacent areas): Holds water but drains poorly. Raised beds and soil amendments can help.

  • Loamy Mix (gardener’s dream): Found in spots near wooded or older residential areas. Just add mulch and you're good to go!

Consider testing your soil pH and texture before you plant. Most garden centers offer kits or local recommendations.
